A phone screen has two layers that matter: the outer glass with the touch sensor, and the display panel underneath (OLED on most iPhones and Galaxy S phones, LCD on many budget models). The display still works, but cracks spread, can cut your fingers and let moisture in. Fixing it now costs less than after the display fails.
The display panel under the glass is damaged. The screen needs replacing, even if the glass looks intact.

Match the original’s deep blacks, brightness and battery use. They cost more, and they are the closest to the factory screen.
For phones that shipped with OLED, these cost less but are usually less bright, a little thicker and can use more battery.
After a screen replacement, iOS may show a message that it can’t verify a genuine Apple display. The phone works normally; True Tone may turn off unless transferred. More on our iPhone screen replacement page.

Phone batteries wear out with every charge cycle. If your phone dies by mid-afternoon, shuts off at 20% or gets hot while charging, a new battery usually fixes it for far less than a new phone. Here is how to check before you come in.
Go to Settings → Battery → Battery Health (Battery Health & Charging on some models). If Maximum Capacity is around 80% or lower, or iOS shows a Service message, a new battery will make a clear difference. Apple explains battery health here, or see our iPhone battery replacement.
On Samsung Galaxy phones, open the Samsung Members app → Support → Phone diagnostics → Battery status. Other Android phones vary; we can test it in the store. More on Samsung battery replacement.
A screen lifting away from the frame or a bulging back cover usually means a swollen battery. Stop charging the phone, don’t press on it, and bring it in for a battery replacement.

On modern smartphones the glass, touch layer and OLED or LCD display are fused into one assembly, so a cracked screen repair replaces the whole screen. That is also why a phone with cracked glass but a working picture costs the same to fix as one with a black display.
Face ID lives in the TrueDepth camera at the top of the iPhone, not in the display, so it keeps working when the screen is replaced carefully. Opening any phone breaks the factory water seal, though, so the original IP water rating can’t be guaranteed after a repair. Keep the phone away from water either way.
