Not every cracked tablet needs a full new screen. On a standard iPad the touch glass is a separate layer, so if the picture underneath still looks fine, only the glass needs replacing. Laminated screens on iPad Air, mini and Pro have the glass fused to the display, so the whole assembly is replaced.

A screen for an iPad Pro or Galaxy Tab S Ultra is worth fixing. On a low-cost Fire tablet, a new screen can cost close to a new tablet.
If the tablet is a few years old and dies quickly, replacing the battery at the same visit saves a second trip.
Repairs don’t touch storage, but back up to iCloud or Google so school work and photos are safe.
